Let the name Café Tribunal fall in Maastricht, and almost everyone knows what you mean. The cozy brown café in the Tongersetraat, right next to the famous Toneelacademie Maastricht, is one of the many unmistakable institutions in the city. Whole generations of Dutch actors and television stars have great memories and come to drink a beer whenever they are in Maastricht.
Fresh peanuts
But not only do students feel at home in the famous café, where the floor is daily scoured with the peels of the fresh peanuts that you get for free with your beer: professors, lawyers, not to mention 'ordinary' Maastricht people (known and lesser known) like to come, often to chat with other Maastrichters about what is happening in the city. People who have lived in Maastricht after a while have moved elsewhere, match the 'Trib' with friends and acquaintances as the most beautiful café in the Netherlands, with one of the country's finest.
Bacon with egg
Café Tribunal - which in 2017 is 55 years old - owes its name to the former court on the other side of the street, where now the administration of the university is housed. What is special about the café is that it is open every day of the week. Monday to Saturday from 8.30 am to midnight and Sunday from 9.00 am to 8 pm.
Except for breakfast you can go to Café Tribunal for a nice little lunch. From Monday to Thursday, from 4 pm onwards an extensive evening ticket will be held, which changes every week. Popular at Café Tribunal is the Early Bird breakfast that is served daily until 11 am: a generous portion of 'bacon with egg' (with baguette) and coffee or tea.
